About Me
Welcome to my ePortfolio and my journey through the Masters of Health Studies program at Athabasca University. Professionally, I am a Respiratory Therapist (RT) and obtained my diploma in Respiratory Therapy from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC. I have been a Respiratory Therapist for the past five years and currently working as a Neonate Intensive Care Unit (NICU) RT Specialist for the past four years. I am member of the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) and BC Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT). Additionally, I served on the Board of Directors for the BCSRT as the Member Relations Director from 2020 to 2023.
In my current role as NICU RT Specialist, I am responsible for the continuity of care for neonates requiring respiratory support. Additionally, I am a resource and support tool for beside RTs and RNs. This involves providing expert knowledge, hands on support and education. In this position, I am expected to teach nurses and newly hired RT NICU specific respiratory therapy. Furthermore, I work as a liaison between the Neonatologist, bedside RTs and the management team.
I recently became a Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) instructor. I am responsible for teaching and coaching medical professions the proper techniques for NRP. This is accomplished through hands on training. I am entrusted to run NRP scenarios and simulations. NRP providers are then tested and NRP competencies are evaluated. I am ultimately responsible for passing or failing NRP providers.
My experiences as a RT so far has been filled with so much on the job learning and professional growth. However, the best part has definitely been working with neonates. Helping neonates overcome their breathing difficulties has been extremely rewarding and fulfilling.
